- The genome map out of the range Pinot Noir has been traced. French and Italian researchers have followed the pinot noir map, used for sparkling wine and many Burgundy wines in France and all over the world, and discovered it has thirty thousand genes in its DNA. This means it has more than the human genome that ranges between twenty and twenty five thousand genes. According to the researchers that have published an article in Nature magazine, they have identified almost five hundred million chemical substances in the grape's DNA. Many sequences from these substances form genes just like letters form words, but this discovery will not affect wine tasting. It is the first grape and fruit of which it's genetic origins have been traced and there are years to follow to apply these discoveries to the vineyards. However it did predict that many varieties of grape will be more resistant to insects and diseases.
